Places to visit in North Sikkim

Lachen

Lachen, this beautiful town is located in the north district of Sikkim and is situated at an elevation of 2750 metres. Lachen meaning "big pass" is filled with natural beauty and serene vegetation, it is to be one of the most popular tourist destinations. 

Lachen is about 129 km away from the capital city Gangtok so it's about 6 hours drive from Gangtok to Lachen but the places that you will see along the way is what completes the tour.

The most beautiful locations in Lachen are the Lachen Monastery, Lachen Chu and the alpine covers. This quaint town is known for its lush vegetation that has mainly grasslands and shrubs with highly maintained apple orchards.

Gurudongmar Lake is named after the famous Guru Padmasambhava, who was also known as Guru Rinpoche. This saint was the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and had visited the lake in the 8th century. It is believed that while on his way back from Tibet, he took a rest on this place. The lake, however, remained frozen throughout large parts of the year, and thus there was no way that it could meet the drinking water needs of the people. The locals then appealed to the guru, who decided to help them. He placed his hand on the part of the lake, and the ice in that particular spot began to melt. Ever since, the magnificent Gurudongmar Lake is considered to be holy, and people carry back the water of the lake in containers since the water is considered to be sacred and possess healing properties. Lachung

Lachung is located at a distance of 120 km from Gangtok and is situated at an altitude of 8610 ft. It is that beautiful town of Sikkim which has several snow covered mountains, sparkling streams, peaks, amazing waterfalls and much more. Lachung means 'Small Mountain', and it gets this name as it is outlined by majestic mountains. 

Lachung is home to innumerable fruit orchards and glacial rivers that cut through the heart of the hamlet and add to its beauty. Lachung will rejuvenate your soul with fresh, crisp and cold mountain air. While in Lachung, if you crave quality food then the local traditional dishes are what you must not skip.
